ABM Tiling Limited, a leading commercial tiling contractor, is proud to have won the contract for the floor tiling of the new science facility at Dulwich College, a prestigious independent school in London, in the summer of 2014. This project saw us forge a new relationship with McLaren Construction, an award-winning contractor with an established reputation for consistent delivery of outstanding projects.

The project comprised over 1000 square meters of 600x300 rectified porcelain non-slip floor tiles to the central galleries, split into two phases, with the first phase now complete and the second phase due for completion in summer 2016. The new science facility is arranged over three levels of a main central gallery with classrooms coming off either side. It is a visually stunning design that allows light to flood in through the full-height glass wall at the north end of the gallery, as well as the glass roof that shines light through to the ground floor onto the famous James Caird lifeboat, now resting in the tiles in an icy sea of crushed glass.

The tiling formed the background to every scene while also being the most heavily used part of this prestigious project. It therefore required the quality and dedication to perfection that ABM Tiling provides on all of our projects. We achieved a flawless finish that both McLaren Construction and Dulwich College were delighted with and look forward to working on Phase 2 and other projects with McLaren in the future.

One of the main requirements for the project was to undertake the works, 100% of which was in the main access areas, while still allowing other trades access to meet their deadlines. This was achieved seamlessly with careful planning by ABM Tiling and the ever-present assistance of McLaren Construction’s dedicated management team, despite the project having a tight schedule of only 5 weeks for the main bulk of the work.

The steelwork 1st and 2nd floor mezzanine galleries had deflected by up to 20mm due to the weight of the concrete, so it was always going to be necessary to flood these areas with a high-quality leveling compound. We contacted our partners Rocatex, and it was decided that it would be an ideal project to use as a case study to help launch their superb new Fibreflow Rapid Flex Leveller.
